Alarm off at 2:45 AM and on the road at 3:30AM. Arrived at race site at 5:45 AM (race started at 7:00AM). There was little support at the registration booth and waited in line for ~20-25 minutes to get through the registration process. After 6:00 AM the staffing numbers improved and the line progressed. That left about 50 minutes to get setup in transition and more importantly a bathroom visit. There were very few stalls and roughly 750 entrants --- had to go like a bear (in the woods).
As daylight broke, the wind steadily increased. I am not sure what the wind speed was, but it blew hard all day long. For the swim this meant big waves. Started the swim in wave 6 (next to last wave with all of the old people) and swam reasonably comfortably considering the conditions. Swam wide to miss the crowd and got way off course because I could not mark the buoys over the waves. I lost a little time on the swim because I penalized myself with extra distance but I felt strong after the swim.
On the bike, I passed a lot of people. My P4 was a target and I dropped a lot of people. Since I was in a later wave, most of the fast bikers were already in front. The wind was brutal. There were strong headwinds and exciting crosswinds. Finished the bike still feeling strong.
Started the run feeling pretty good. Conditions were windy and hot. I kept a very steady pace through mile 11. At mile 9, I started having a lot a gas and at mile 11 my stomach revolted. I felt like I was going to either heave or soil my pants. I backed off my pace and ran/walked to the finish. I think that I lost 5 or 6 minutes in the last 2 miles. Overall time was 5 hr 20 min, 125th out of 515 overall and 7th out of 35 AG. I am not sure if my pre-race nutrition was bad or if I just reached my limit and started to redline.
I like the Kinetic Half course. The swim, bike and run venues are all good. The water temp was very comfortable with a wetsuit. The only drawbacks to the race are that it is hard to find lodging close to the start and they need more Porta-Johns at the start.

A little entertainment and motivation for the season.
The Triathlon Song
Ironman Motivation
I used to use this song as my alarm clock before early morning workouts. The Eminem song actually translates to Triathlon OK!
